Matthes
David Matthes is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Biology Teaching and Learning and in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His courses include Biol 1951 (Foundations of Biology I – for which he received Science magazine’s Inquiry Based Instruction award), Biol 2003 (Foundations of Biology II – Cell Biology and Ecology), GCD 3485 (a project-based bioinformatic analysis course in which students characterize human genes of unknown function), and GCD 3486 (a project-based personal genome analysis course in which students analyze their own genome variations).
He has received several awards from students in the College of Biological Sciences: “Most Engaging Professor”, "Most Passionate Professor", "Most Approachable Professor", "Best Life Advice", and "Most Rewarding Challenges". He's also won both the university's highest teaching awards: The Dagley-Kirkwood Undergraduate Education Award and the Horace T. Morse & University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.
He has contributed to the scholarship of teaching and learning, particularly in the use of SCALE-UP style active learning classrooms, team-based learning, and as related to teaching and learning of genetics, genomics, bioinformatic analysis, and cell biology. Professor Matthes is dedicated to being an effective, innovative, and transformative instructor at the University of Minnesota.
Research interests
Semaphorin gene family of axon guidance molecules; Genetic analysis Drosophila Semaphorin 2a function by generating and characterizing loss-of-function and gain-of-function phenotypes; Gunctional dissection of the semaphorin domain using P-element mediated germline transformation; Axon guidance and the foundation for future work on inhibitory molecules in neural development; Viral semaphorins in vaccinia and variola viruses; Viral semaphorins modulating the migration of human leukocytes; Human semaphorin capability of acting as a strong chemoattractant for T cells; Semaphorins within the mouse thymus as guidance molecules during thymic development.

Teaching statement
My goal is to be the most transformative educator and effective facilitator of student learning that I can be. I aspire for my students to achieve outstanding learning gains, to develop the personal and professional skills required for success at the highest level in biology-related careers, and to develop a deep and enduring interest in biology as a discipline. I recognize the power of team-based learning, active learning strategies more broadly, authentic research experiences within courses, and leveraging both universal and student-specific interests to increase student motivation and effort. Finally, I understand that learning is fundamentally about making connections so aim to help my students create powerful connections between their existing experience and the subjects that it is my privilege to teach.
