There are three types of TA positions:

  • Laboratory TAs independently oversee one or two laboratory sections of 20-25 students each. They are supported in this role with teaching materials and training. Typical lab TA responsibilities include: minute-to-minute organization of the 2- to 3-hour laboratory period; grading the laboratory material for the students in their section; holding office hours to assist students with lab questions and concerns.
  • Foundations Laboratory (BIOL 1961 and 3004) TAs help students with their research projects in our Active Learning Lab and/or assist a graduate TA with in-lab or in-class activities. Typical responsibilities include: helping students identify, locate and use materials, procedures and software needed for their work; answering students’ questions and helping them work through challenges; assisting with lab organization, administrative tasks and reviewing student work.
  • Lecture TAs play an important role in our dynamic, active learning classrooms. Typical lecture TA responsibilities include: providing students with written and/or verbal feedback on assignments and in-class activities; interacting with students and facilitating group interactions during class; holding office hours to answer questions and assist students with course concepts.

Pay

New TAs earn $15.25 per hour; returning TAs can earn $15.75-$16.25 per hour.

Benefits

A few benefits of TA positions include allowing students to master biology concepts and communication skills, collaborating with peers and instructors, learning to work in a supportive team environment, developing leadership skills and contributing to a positive experience for our students.
